Japan Tax Facts - The Basics

Japan Tax Year

Jan. 1 – Dec.31

Who Pays Taxes in Japan?

Anyone who spends more than 6 months of fiscal year on Japanese soil.

Japanese taxpayer classifications

(a)Resident: Have an address in Japan and have lived in the country continuously for one year or more.
(i) Non Permanent Residents: Have had an address in Japan continuously for not more than five years, but has no intention of permanently residing in the country
(ii) Permanent Resident: All residents other than non-permanent residents

(b)Non resident: Not a resident of Japan.

Japan Tax Rates:
(a) National (Income Tax)
(b) Local (Resident Tax)

National: Governments uses this money for roads, public school teachers, the Emperor’s family, etc.

Local: Includes prefectural taxes (the district administered by a chief officer) and municipal taxes.
-Municipal taxes pay for public libraries, public swimming pools, etc.

Taxing Wages – The Withholding Tax System

Taxes are automatically deducted from employee’s paychecks by their employer
-Tax deducted usually higher than real rates, but difference is returned at the end of the year
-Typically, foreign teachers who are residents, pay 6-9% tax each year (depends on local tax)
-Those who are foreign non residents, pay about 20%

Filing Tax Returns

If you make less then 20,000,000 yen in fiscal year, return filed by employer
-If make more, go to nearest tax office and ask for help filling out forms

Necessary Documentation for Filing (if not done by employer)

1.) Proof of previous year’s income (Withholding Tax at the Source Statements, original receipts, etc.)
2.) Documents for exemptions for dependents and spouse (Birth certificates of dependants abroad, proof of remittances to dependants abroad, etc.)
3.) Documents for exemptions for insurance (Insurance premium payment receipts)
4.) Certificate of Alien Registration
5.) Seal /Signature
